1. Joining the E18 towards Asker/Drammen
Slependkrysset
Why to watch out here
The acceleration lane is about 200 m, and a bus lane (kollektivfelt) runs on the right side of the road. People fail for joining too slowly (one candidate was 5 km/h under the limit and never merged) and for the wrong lane: the examiners at Billingstad require the rightmost ordinary lane.
What to do
Accelerate in the acceleration lane up to the speed of traffic, look for a gap using the mirror and shoulder check, and merge before the lane ends. You may cross the kollektivfelt but not drive in it in an ordinary car; after that stay in the rightmost ordinary lane, and use the left one only for overtaking.
-
2. The three-lane roundabout
Sandvika (Sandviksveien × Drammensveien × Vesttunnelen)
Why to watch out here
A 3-lane roundabout right by the E18/E16, with traffic from the E18 exit ramp joining too. Mistakes: wrong lane on entry, changing lanes inside without looking, and cutting across someone at the exit. A candidate writes that the examiner grabbed the wheel when he cut across in the roundabout.
What to do
Choose your lane before entering, going by the arrows: turning right, the right lane; further on, the left lane. Inside, stay in your lane; before your exit: mirror, shoulder check, indicator. If you can't make it, take another lap; that is not a mistake.
-
3. The roundabout in the tunnel by the shopping centre
Vesttunnelen, Sandvika
Why to watch out here
A roundabout inside a tunnel in central Sandvika (on the forum: "the tunnel under the storsenter"): dim light, two lanes, and the signs come into view late. People mix up exits, change lanes abruptly and forget the 50 limit.
What to do
Headlights on before the tunnel, no more than 50, and read the signs early. If you miss your exit, go round once more; don't jerk the wheel.
-
4. A short slip road onto the E16 and a weaving section
Bærumsveikrysset (by Hamangtunnelen)
Why to watch out here
The acceleration stretch is short, and the lane you merge into turns off by itself onto the Lommedalskrysset exit after about 250 m. Some cars are merging in while others are immediately changing lanes to take the exit. If you hesitate, you end up in the wrong place or cut someone off.
What to do
Accelerate straight away and merge. If you're continuing along the E16, move to the left lane immediately (mirror, shoulder check, indicator). If the examiner says "Vøyenenga/Lommedalen", stay on the right.
-
5. Priority to the right in the town centre
Asker sentrum (Bankveien × Meierisvingen)
Why to watch out here
Asker sentrum is where "most mistakes" happen: exits that look like car parks are actually junctions with the priority-to-the-right rule (høyreregel). From the right comes the one-way Meierisvingen, and you must let it go first; from the neighbouring Busserullen (a gatetun, residential zone) they yield to you.
What to do
On every street without signs, slow down and look right. With no give-way or priority-road sign, let the person coming from the right go first. Anyone coming out of a gatetun or a car park has to yield to you.
-
6. Leaving the station
Billingstad trafikkstasjon / Stasjonsveien
Why to watch out here
You can't leave the way you came in: there's a "no entry" sign, so you have to go around the station. It's possible to slip up before the route even starts, and then pull out onto the road without yielding.
What to do
Spot the signs before you start: from the car park turn left and go around the building. You enter Stasjonsveien like leaving a car park: let cars, pedestrians and cyclists go first.
-
7. The first roundabout with zebra crossings
Billingstadsletta × Bergerveien
Why to watch out here
A small roundabout 150 m from the station, with a zebra crossing and refuge island on every exit. Nervous at the start of the test, people forget to signal when exiting or miss the pedestrian on the crossing.
What to do
Slow down early and let those already in the roundabout go first (they come from the left). Before your exit: right indicator and a look at the crossing; if someone is on it or about to step on, stop.
-
8. A bus pulling away from the stop
Billingstadsletta, Bergerveien stop
Why to watch out here
On a road with a speed limit of up to 60 km/h you must yield to a bus signalling to pull out from a stop. A candidate from Billingstad writes that he almost failed on exactly this.
What to do
As you approach the stop, if a bus is standing there indicating left, ease off the accelerator and let it pull out. Don't speed up to "squeeze past".
-
9. The roundabout at the E18 interchange
Slependkrysset (Billingstadsletta × Slependveien)
Why to watch out here
Cars come straight off the E18 into this roundabout via a two-lane ramp, fast and close together. Candidates either wait at the entry for no reason or pull in in front of the car from the left.
What to do
Look left early, judge the speed of the cars coming from the E18 and enter a gap with confidence. Going straight on: right indicator only after you have passed the exit before yours.
-
10. The roundabout people mention on the forum
Sandviksveien × Slependveien
Why to watch out here
The route splits here: right along Sandviksveien towards Sandvika, or straight on along Slependveien towards Tanum (where the limit is 40). Candidates signal wrongly and enter too fast.
What to do
Listen to the examiner early. "Sandvika" is the first exit to the right: right indicator already before you enter. "Tanum": no indicator on entry; you turn on the right indicator after passing the Sandviksveien exit. After the roundabout the limit is 40.
-
11. Towards Hønefoss on the E16: choosing your lane
Kjørbo roundabout (E16 × E18), Sandvika
Why to watch out here
Two roundabouts in a row, each with two lanes. To get onto the E16 towards Hønefoss you need to be in the right lane well in advance. In 2015 an instructor called the entry to the E16 from Sandvika towards Hønefoss one of the hardest spots (the junction was different then).
What to do
When the examiner says "Hønefoss", take the right lane right away (arrows "straight | right"). In the second roundabout the first exit is the E16: right indicator. After that there's a single lane and straight into the Bjørnegård tunnel: headlights on and keep your distance.
-
12. The roundabout where people drove the wrong way
Brynsveien × Johan Grauers gate
Why to watch out here
In 2019 the roundabout was enlarged and shifted, and drivers coming from here turned left, against the direction of traffic: the road authority counted about 15 cars an hour. The shortcut "to the left" looks obvious.
What to do
You always enter a roundabout to the right, anticlockwise, even if the exit is right next to you on the left. Yield to those already in the roundabout.
-
13. Exiting the E16 straight into a roundabout
Lommedalskrysset (Vøyenenga)
Why to watch out here
From 80 km/h straight into a roundabout, and there are two in a row. People don't manage to slow down and confuse which roundabout has the exit to Vøyenenga.
What to do
Brake smoothly already on the ramp, and in a manual shift down to 2nd. Before the roundabout look left and enter slowly. The exit onto Møllerløkka towards Vøyenenga is in the second roundabout.
-
14. Left turn at traffic lights
Kolsås-krysset (Bærumsveien × Brynsveien)
Why to watch out here
One of the few real signalised junctions in Bærum. Mistakes: wrong lane (the left lane is for left turns only), the wrong path through the junction, and turning on green without yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
What to do
Take the left lane with the left arrow in good time. On green, roll forward to the middle, let oncoming traffic and pedestrians on the crossing you're turning into go first, and only then make the turn.
-
15. From the E18 straight into a roundabout
Holmenkrysset (E18 × Slemmestadveien × Kirkeveien)
Why to watch out here
Straight from the main road into the roundabout: wrong lane relative to the arrows and too much speed on entry. And on the E18 itself at Holmen the limit changes: according to OSM 60 km/h by day and 80 from 10:00 to 06:00.
What to do
Read the speed limit on the E18 from the signs and the variable sign now, not from memory. Brake early on the ramp, choose your lane by the arrows before entering, and yield to those in the roundabout.
-
16. A flat roundabout and zebra crossings on slopes
Kirkeveien × Bankveien × Hagaløkkveien (Asker)
Why to watch out here
The small flat roundabouts in Asker are easy to miss without a sign, and people drive through them like an ordinary junction. All three arms have zebra crossings on a slope, and there are many pedestrians.
What to do
When you see the roundabout sign, yield to those in it, even if the island is flat, and drive around it. Before a zebra crossing on a slope, slow to walking pace and look left and right.
-
17. Schools and zebra crossings on slopes
Billingstadsletta by Holmen skole / Nesbru vgs
Why to watch out here
Holmen skole and Nesbru videregående are right nearby, and the road has zebra crossings with refuges on slopes and the Nedre Berger/Nesbru bus stops. In the morning and after school, children appear from behind the buses.
What to do
Don't hold 50 "flat out": slow down in good time and watch the pavements and refuges. If someone is standing at the crossing, stop smoothly.
-
18. A 7–9% slope before the roundabout
Tanumveien × Slependveien (Tanum)
Why to watch out here
Before the roundabout the gradient is 7–9%: the car picks up speed going downhill and people brake too late. In the opposite direction with a manual gearbox the car rolls back when starting uphill from a queue.
What to do
Going down, keep to 40 and brake early; in a manual, use a lower gear. Starting uphill: handbrake or auto-hold, give gas and bring the clutch up to the biting point, then release the brake.
