All 17, explained.

  1. 1. Roundabout by Kiwi Kjeller, two lanes

    Fetveien / Skedsmo kirkevei (Brauterkrysset)

    Why to watch out here

Right after the first roundabout and before the second there are two lanes. Candidates pick the wrong lane (left towards Lillestrøm needs the left lane, right towards Kjellerholen/E6 the right lane), change lanes at the last moment or fail to let the bus out from the Brauterkrysset stop.

    What to do

Decide where you are going as you leave the first roundabout: to Lillestrøm (Fetveien to the south-east) — left lane, towards Kjellerholen/Hvam — right lane. Give way to everyone before the roundabout and keep to your lane in it.

  2. 2. Traffic lights, three lanes

    Fetveien × Storgata × Åråsveien

    Why to watch out here

This is where people turn "down into Lillestrøm". Candidates pick the wrong one of the three lanes, change lanes over a solid line at the stop line, either slam on the brakes in a panic or rush through on amber, and when turning on green fail to notice a pedestrian or cyclist.

    What to do

Read the arrows on the road surface early: for the centre, the far right lane. Turn slowly on green and give way to those crossing Storgata. Amber: if you can stop calmly, stop.

  3. 3. Pedestrian crossing and 60→40

    Storgata (Lillestrøm)

    Why to watch out here

The speed drops from 60 to 40, and further on the lights at Vestbygata build up a queue. Candidates stop right on the crossing in the queue (a real mistake from this station) or approach the crossing too fast.

    What to do

Be at 40 already when you reach the 40 sign. In a queue keep the crossing clear: stop before it if there is no room for the whole car beyond it. If you see someone at the kerb, brake early.

  4. 4. Priority to the right (høyreregel)

    Alexander Kiellands gate × Romeriksgata

    Why to watch out here

The wide street looks like the main road, but there are no priority-road signs (according to local descriptions): cars from the side streets on the right go first. Candidates drive through the junction without slowing down.

    What to do

Slow down before every side street on the right and look right. If there is a car there, stop. Check for a "Forkjørsvei" sign yourself on the spot.

  5. 5. Roundabout, choice of lane

    Kjellerholen (Fetveien / Trondheimsveien)

    Why to watch out here

Here the routes split: left — Rv 22 Trondheimsveien to the west towards Hvam and E6, almost straight/right — Trondheimsveien (Fv 1496) to the north towards Skedsmokorset. Candidates pick the wrong lane and change lanes right in the roundabout without giving way to the car beside them.

    What to do

Listen to the examiner and read the sign before the roundabout: for E6/Hvam (left) — left lane, for Skedsmokorset (Fv 1496, right) — right lane. In the roundabout keep to your lane until your exit.

  6. 6. Joining the E6 with a short acceleration lane

    Hvamkrysset (towards Trondheim)

    Why to watch out here

The E6 is 100 km/h, and the acceleration lane after the nose is only about 130 m. Candidates drive 60–70 on it, brake at the end, or merge without looking over the left shoulder.

    What to do

Build up speed already on the slip road. From the nose check the mirror and look over the left shoulder, find a gap and merge at the speed of the traffic. Do not stop in the acceleration lane unless absolutely necessary.

  7. 7. Exit 45 with a bus lane

    Skedsmovollenkrysset

    Why to watch out here

The examiner says "exit 45", the candidate goes into the right lane, and that is the bus lane. A second typical mistake is braking while still on the E6 instead of in the deceleration lane.

    What to do

Signal in good time, keep your speed on the E6 until the deceleration lane starts and brake only in it. On the slip road stay in the left, ordinary lane (the right one is marked with a sign/markings as kollektivfelt) and give way to everyone in the roundabout.

  8. 8. Leaving the station

    Instituttveien

    Why to watch out here

The candidate is nervous and pulls out of the car park as if on a priority road: fails to give way to a cyclist or pedestrian (there is no pavement on this stretch) and speeds up at once.

    What to do

At the edge of the car park slow down to almost zero, look left, right and left again, and let everyone on the road and the cycle lane pass. Only then turn left towards the roundabout.

  9. 9. First roundabout

    Instituttveien / Skedsmo kirkevei

    Why to watch out here

A roundabout a minute after the start: candidates enter without properly giving way to those already in it, and forget to signal when exiting. There is a zebra crossing on every arm, with the bus stops Nordsnoveien and Brauterkrysset close by, and pedestrians go unnoticed.

    What to do

Approach slowly, give way to everyone in the roundabout and to pedestrians on the crossing before the entry. Before your exit signal right, and look at the crossing on the exit straight away.

  10. 10. Traffic lights with a cycle lane

    Storgata × Vestbygata

    Why to watch out here

When turning right on green, the candidate crosses the cycle lane without looking over the right shoulder. The cyclist on the right is going straight on and has priority.

    What to do

Before turning right: mirror, a look over the right shoulder into the blind spot, let the cyclist and the pedestrians on the crossing go. Turn slowly, hugging the right edge.

  11. 11. Five-exit roundabout

    Sagdalen (Strømsveien / Skjettenveien)

    Why to watch out here

Five arms (Strømsveien ×2, Skjettenveien, Engaveien): candidates mix up their exit and signal right at the wrong exit. The driver at the exit before yours thinks you are leaving.

    What to do

Count the exits in advance from the signs. Signal right once you have passed the exit before yours. Give way to everyone in the roundabout and to pedestrians at the crossings.

  12. 12. Camera in a tunnel, downhill

    Rælingstunnelen (Rv 159)

    Why to watch out here

On the downhill the car speeds up by itself above 80, and there is a camera (ATK) in the tunnel. Right after the tunnel it is 70, then 50 on Lillestrømbrua. Speeding = fail.

    What to do

Hold 75–80 on the speedometer and use engine braking on the descent. After the tunnel come down to 70, and reach the 50 sign already at 50.

  13. 13. Roundabout with crossings by the school

    Fetveien × Kunnskapsveien (Kjeller skole)

    Why to watch out here

The small roundabout on Rv 22 is taken "on autopilot": zebra crossings right on the exits, Kjeller skole about 200 m away, and children here in the morning and afternoon. Candidates do not let the pedestrian cross at the exit.

    What to do

At the entry give way to everyone in the roundabout. At the exit look at the crossing first and only then add gas. If you notice children by the road, slow down even more.

  14. 14. Roundabout in the centre and the end of the bus lane

    Skedsmokorset

    Why to watch out here

On the right a kollektivfelt runs almost up to the roundabout, and at the roundabout it turns into an ordinary "straight on/right" lane. Candidates enter the bus lane too early or cut off their neighbour at the last moment.

    What to do

While there is a bus lane on your right, stay in the left lane. Change lanes only after the kollektivfelt markings end, using the mirror and a shoulder check. Enter the roundabout giving way to everyone already in it.

  15. 15. 80 out of town, a tractor ahead

Gjerdrumsveien (Fv 120) north of Skedsmokorset

    Why to watch out here

Candidates from this station have already failed on this road for driving too slowly: 40 in an 80 zone and a long time behind a tractor. The opposite mistake is a risky overtake on a short straight with oncoming traffic.

    What to do

After the 80 sign speed up to a speed that suits the conditions, not to a "safe" 50. Overtake the tractor only on a long clear straight. If you cannot overtake, keep your distance and tell the examiner why.

  16. 16. Residential area 30, priority to the right

    Bregneveien × Sildreveien (Kjeller)

    Why to watch out here

In the residential area you get the exercise "reversing round the corner to the right". Candidates fail to give way to the car on the right at the narrow junction, drive over 30, or reverse without checking for pedestrians.

    What to do

30 means 30. At every junction look right and give way. When reversing, go slowly, looking over your shoulder and in the mirrors; if someone appears, stop.

  17. 17. Change 60→80, country road along the airfield

Rolf Olsens vei (Fv 1535) towards Leirsund

    Why to watch out here

Here 60 changes to 80: candidates speed up before the sign or crawl at 60 after it. On the way back they do not slow to 60 by the sign. Plus there are farm accesses with no visibility.

    What to do

Speed up after the 80 sign. On the way back be down to 60 right at the sign. Near accesses and trailers keep your foot over the brake.
