1. Zebra crossing on the slip road and a short merge northbound
Haraldrudveien → Østre Aker vei
Why to watch out here
There is a zebra crossing right on the slip road, and 20 m later you merge into traffic; the acceleration lane is about 50 m according to OSM. It's easy to look only left at the cars and miss a pedestrian. Or the opposite: stop on the slip road for no reason and lose speed.
What to do
Slow down before the zebra crossing and look at both pavements. Once past the crossing: left mirror, shoulder check, left indicator. Accelerate to the speed of traffic and merge into a gap.
-
2. Short merge from the test centre onto the main road
Risløkkalléen → Østre Aker vei
Why to watch out here
A single-lane slip road with a "Give way" sign, and the acceleration lane is only about 75 m according to OSM. People who took the test call these merges near Risløkka "unpleasant". Tip: don’t drive out into the acceleration lane until you’ve found a gap. Cutting in front of a car or stopping at the end of the lane is a fail.
What to do
While still on the slip road, check the left mirror and look over your left shoulder. Gap: left indicator, accelerate to the speed of traffic, merge. No gap: stop at the start of the acceleration lane, not at the end. In winter (1 November – 8 April) the limit here is usually 60, not 80 — check the signs.
-
3. One-way street
Risløkkalléen × Risløkkveien
Why to watch out here
Risløkkveien is a one-way street (according to OSM, towards Brobekkveien). Turning left here means driving against the traffic. That breaks a sign with an "absolute" requirement: the test is stopped. Someone who took the test at Risløkka specifically warned about the one-way street.
What to do
As you approach, look for signs: a red circle with a white bar ("No entry") or a blue one with an arrow ("One-way"). Here you can only go straight on or right. If the examiner said "left" but there's a sign, say so and drive on. Taking the wrong route is not a fail.
-
4. Right-hand rule
Risløkkalléen × Anton Tschudis vei
Why to watch out here
A junction of residential streets with no signs in OSM — the right-hand rule (høyreregelen) applies. A car from Anton Tschudis vei on your right goes first. Breaking the right-hand rule can mean a fail. About the area behind Risløkka people write: "lots of give-ways you have to remember".
What to do
20–30 m before the junction, slow down to 15–20 km/h. Look right first, then left. Car on the right — stop and let it go. In winter approach even more slowly: the car on the right may not manage to brake in time.
-
5. Zebra crossing with a traffic island
Brobekkveien near Vollebekk
Why to watch out here
A zebra crossing without traffic lights, with a traffic island in the middle. Not giving way to a pedestrian who is already crossing or clearly about to cross is a fail. In winter it's already dark at 16–17: a person in dark clothes is seen late. Braking hard at the last moment also counts against you.
What to do
You see the crossing sign — foot over the brake. Look at both pavements and at the island. Someone is standing at the kerb looking at the road — stop smoothly before the line.
-
6. STOPP sign before the E6
Teisenveien → Strømsveien
Why to watch out here
One of the two STOPP signs mapped in OSM within 4.5 km of the test centre (the other is on a service road). At a STOPP sign you stop completely, even on an empty road. "Rolling through" at 3–5 km/h is driving against a sign with an absolute requirement, and people fail for it. Right after it comes a main road with an 80 limit.
What to do
Come to a full stop at the stop line: the wheels stand still for 1–2 seconds. No stop line — stop as close to the crossing road as possible. Look both ways and give way to everyone. Then pull away decisively and accelerate quickly.
-
7. Two merges in a row onto Rv4
Linderud → Trondheimsveien
Why to watch out here
There are two merges in a row here: your slip road joins the exit lane, and after ~120 m everything merges into Rv4 (70, 60 in winter). Someone who took the test from Risløkka called this merge "skikkelig guffen" and said he would practise it before a retake. Slow merging = "poor flow".
What to do
At the first merge, check the sign: a triangle means you give way; no sign and the lanes come together — take turns. Right after that — left mirror and shoulder, pick a gap on Rv4 while still in the acceleration lane and accelerate to 60–70. Don't brake without a reason.
-
8. Two-lane roundabout
Sinsenkrysset (entering from Trondheimsveien)
Why to watch out here
The busiest junction in Norway (~100,000 vehicles a day), a two-lane roundabout. Mistakes: wrong lane, changing lanes inside the roundabout without checking the mirror, no indicator at the exit. On a forum Sinsenkrysset is called a "must" for Oslo; in Dinside's real driving test the route went through it.
What to do
Choose your lane before the roundabout using the signs: left and turning around — left lane, right — right lane. Going left: left indicator, keep close to the island. Once you've passed the exit before yours — right indicator, mirror, shoulder. Car on your right — let it go, then exit.
-
9. Tram through the roundabout
Carl Berners plass
Why to watch out here
The tram runs straight through the central island of the roundabout, and the tracks cross the roundabout right at the entry. Many people in Oslo don't know they have to give way to the tram. The tram can't steer around you: if the examiner had to brake — fail.
What to do
Give way before the line: look left into the roundabout and along the tracks in both directions. Don't stop on the tracks in a queue — wait until there's room beyond them. A tram is leaving the roundabout — let it go.
-
10. Leaving the test centre car park
Risløkkalléen
Why to watch out here
Here the examiner watches how you pull away: mirror, blind spot, indicator, a calm exit. Leaving a car park, you give way to everyone driving on the street and to pedestrians. Forgot the shoulder check — a minus from the first minute.
What to do
Before pulling away: mirror, indicator, shoulder check. At the edge of the street almost stop, look left and right, let cars and pedestrians pass. Then pull out smoothly, without jerking.
-
11. Merge and exit straight away to the test centre
Østre Aker vei
Why to watch out here
You merge into traffic doing 80 (60 in winter) and almost immediately exit into a 30 zone. The right lane here is shared: some merge in, others exit. Mistakes: squeezing in without a gap, changing lanes without the mirror, entering Risløkkalléen faster than 30.
What to do
Merge into the right lane and stay in it — you're turning right. Right indicator early, brake on the exit lane, not on the main road. On Risløkkalléen check the speedometer right away: 30.
-
12. Four roundabouts in a row
Brobekkveien × Østre Aker vei interchange
Why to watch out here
Four small roundabouts within 400 m. You have to indicate again in each one: people often forget to signal their exit or do it too late. Another mistake is stopping before a roundabout when nobody is there. It can be judged as “poor flow”.
What to do
Take each roundabout separately: speed down, look left, give way to those already in the roundabout. Turning right — right indicator 4–5 seconds before entering. Straight on — right indicator once you've passed the previous exit. Clear — don't stop, keep rolling.
-
13. School: 40 → 30 and pedestrian lights
Brobekkveien near Vollebekk skole
Why to watch out here
At the school the speed limit drops from 40 to 30, and right there is a crossing with traffic lights. Driving 40 in the 30 zone can mean a fail. From 2027 there may be roadworks here: temporary signs will appear.
What to do
Slow down before the 30 sign, not after it. Watch the children by the pavement and the crossing's traffic lights. If temporary roadwork signs are up, they override the old road markings.
-
14. Bus lane right after the roundabout
Ulvenveien (Økern)
Why to watch out here
Right at the exit from the roundabout, the right lane is for buses (according to OSM). Out of habit people exit the roundabout into the right lane and end up in the kollektivfelt. A petrol or diesel car is not allowed there.
What to do
Before leaving the roundabout, look for the "Kollektivfelt" sign and BUSS written on the road. Exit straight into the left lane. Need to go right further on — follow the signs and markings; don't drive in that lane unless you're allowed to.
-
15. Joining the E6 motorway
Ulven
Why to watch out here
This is a motorvei (80). The acceleration lane is about 85 m according to OSM. Merging slowly or stopping in the acceleration lane is dangerous and looks like "poor flow". Further on towards Alnabru the right lane becomes a bus lane.
What to do
Accelerate decisively on the slip road, almost to the speed of traffic. Mirror, shoulder, left indicator, merge into a gap. Then watch the lane signs: where a kollektivfelt starts on the right, move further left. On a motorvei you may not turn around or reverse.
-
16. Raised zebra crossing near schools
Statsråd Mathiesens vei (Linderud)
Why to watch out here
A zebra crossing on a "table" (raised crossing) by Linderud skole, with Bjerke vgs nearby. Mistakes: flying onto the table without braking, not noticing a schoolchild behind a car, braking hard at the last moment.
What to do
Slow down to 30 in good time, before the table. Look at both sides and between parked cars. In the morning and in the dark — even slower.
-
17. Hill start + right-hand rule
Økernveien × Lunden
Why to watch out here
A junction in the middle of a steep climb. Lunden comes in from the right, with no signs in OSM — the right-hand rule applies, and you may have to stop on the hill. In a manual car people stall or roll back here. If you stall and get in others' way, the examiner may count it as a dangerous situation.
What to do
Before the junction, look right at Lunden. If you have to stop, hold the car on the brake or the handbrake. Pulling away: 1st gear, gas ~1500–2000 rpm, clutch to the "bite point", then release the handbrake. No rolling back at all.
-
18. Exit from Rv4 straight into a small roundabout
Bjerke (Årvollveien / Refstadveien)
Why to watch out here
From 70 (60 in winter) straight into a small single-lane roundabout with 5 arms. Mistakes: braking while still on Rv4, entering the roundabout too fast, not signalling the exit. People who took the test from Risløkka had the route "av motorveien på Refstadveien".
What to do
Right indicator early, move onto the exit lane and only brake there. Before the roundabout, slow to ~20 km/h, look left, give way to those in the roundabout. Exiting onto Refstadveien — right indicator; the limit there is 40.
-
19. Choosing a lane at traffic lights
Økernveien × Grenseveien
Why to watch out here
Three lanes: left | straight on | right (according to OSM), with separate signals for each direction. The mistake is realising too late which lane is yours and changing lanes across a solid line at the stop line. On Økernveien, read the signs and road markings early.
What to do
150–200 m before, look at the arrows on the road and the direction signs. Change lanes early: mirror, indicator, shoulder. Too late — stay in your lane and turn around later. Going the wrong way is not a fail.
-
20. Exit from Ring 3: zebra crossing + roundabout
Tvetenveien × Adolf Hedins vei (Bryn)
Why to watch out here
After Ring 3 (70, 60 in winter), there's a zebra crossing on the exit ~15 m before the roundabout, then a give-way line. People look left at the roundabout and miss the pedestrian. Or they shoot into the roundabout when there's a car on the left.
What to do
Brake early on the exit. Zebra crossing first: check both pavements. Then at the line — look left into the roundabout, give way. Indicator when exiting; on Tvetenveien there is sometimes a bus lane on the right.
-
21. Kalbakken exit, where the right lane is a bus lane
Trondheimsveien
Why to watch out here
Before the exit, the right lane of Rv4 is a bus lane, and on the exit itself the right one of the two lanes is also for buses only (according to OSM). It's easy to exit via the bus lane or to brake while still on Rv4.
What to do
Read the signs and lanes in advance. Enter the exit via a permitted lane and keep to the left lane on the ramp. Brake on the exit, not on Rv4.
